This is The Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson CBE MP's latest newsletter (

I hope you all joined me in watching the World Cup this summer. Although we didn’t get through to the final, our team made us so proud getting to the semi-finals for the first time since 1990. It was so great seeing people out and about supporting our team, as well as supporting our local pubs.

Back in June, I was really unhappy to hear that in a presentation by transport body Midlands Connect to council chiefs, it appeared that the controversial Western Orbital scheme was back on the table after twice being rejected in the 1990s and 2000s. The proposed motorway, also known as the Wolverhampton bypass, would cut a 40-mile swathe through unblemished countryside from M5 junction 4a at Bromsgrove to junction 2 of the M54 near the i54 business park, the majority of which is in South Staffordshire.

Following a meeting with Midlands Connect, I was reassured that there are no plans to advance proposals for a Western Orbital. However, I do remain sceptical about this.  I am going to be pressing them continually to ensure that this ridiculous, inappropriate development does not go ahead.

I have also been meeting with officials from South Staffordshire Council, as well as local campaigners, about the West Midlands Interchange proposal. I want to assure residents that I am going to fight this proposal every step of the way as, if it goes ahead, it would damage the distinct identity of our villages, destroy a huge area of green belt and undoubtedly increase noise and air pollution. Not forgetting the fact it will vastly increase traffic, as well as the number of lorries on our roads.

Protecting and preserving our green belt is something I have always worked hard to do and I will continue to do this as your Member of Parliament.
